Tel Awiw, Jerozolima i Betlejem - 3 miasta w jedną podróż, zapraszam Was na część pierwszą! I have been preparing this post for a long time. It's because I wanted to included whole highlights and the most important information from my best trip so far. Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem - 3 cities in one trip, check out first part this blog post!*** Tel Awiw, Jerozolima i Betlejem - 3 miasta w jedną podróż Nie będę ukrywać, że przed wylotem tutaj miałam pewne obawy. English version: I will not lie that before flying here I had some concerns. I was mainly worried about security reasons, but at the same time I wanted to see Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Bethlehem - 3 cities in one trip sound really super exciting! So I thought that now or never! Therefore, we landed at the airport in Tel Aviv. After the arrival we go to the tourist visa issuing point. Prepare yourself that you have to answer some basic questions like: where are you going from, what is your nationality, how much have you come, with whom and for what purpose. In fact, these are standard questions when issuing a residence permit in a given country. Interesting fact: the visa has recently been issued in the form of a separate paper card, which you can put in your passport, but it is not a stamp, as it used to be. This is a great convenience for people who want to travel to Arab countries, mainly for political reasons. It happened more than once that people with an Israeli visa in their passport had problems with granting Arabic one, in Jordan. Witamy w Jerozolimie Po przyznaniu wizy z lotniska w Tel Awiwie ruszyliśmy prosto do Jerozolimy. Najszybszym i jednocześnie najtańszym środkiem transportu jest miejski pociąg. Super wygodny i umieszczony w podziemiach lotniska. Rewelacja! Bilet kosztuje zaledwie 15 szekli, a odległość jaką musi pokonać pociąg to ok. 60 km. English version: After granting a visa from the airport in Tel Aviv, we went straight to Jerusalem. The fastest and at the same time the cheapest type of public transport is a city train. Super comfortable and located in the -1 floor of the airport. Revelation! The ticket costs only 15 shekels, and the distance that the train must travel is about 60 km. Jednocześnie jeśli lubicie robić zakupy, to miejsce idealne dla Was! English version: Jerusalem - Old City We started our sightseeing with a walk straight to the old town. If you do not know the topography of the city, and you are here for the first time, you intuitively head towards the market located in the mazes of the old walls of Jerusalem. As it turned out later, it belongs mainly to Muslim traders who tempt tourists with colorful spices, ceramics, decorations and beautiful jewelry. It's hard to walk past them peacefully! I also advise you not to go here on a trip alone, because it is very easy to get lost here. At the same time, if you like shopping, this is the perfect place for you! Muslims love to haggle and you can often hunt for beautiful and tasty things at a really low price. Ściana Płaczu Absolutny punkt obowiązkowy wycieczki do Jerozolimy. English version: The Western Wall An absolute must to see if you are planning visit Jerusalem. There is quite a specific atmosphere here combining a kind of mysticism and a strange tension. The Western Wall is divided into two sides: men's right, and women's left. This is a very obvious division that must be absolutely respected. Before entering here, you need to undergo an additional security checkpoint, which is at each entrance to the Western Wall. It is more or less like airport control, but much more efficient and literally takes a moment. Israelis justify this with security issues, which is not surprising. After all, Jerusalem is a city where the three largest religions of the world cross each other: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. English version: Baklava is my favorite type of sweets, that's why being in Israel I couldn't resist trying as much as possible. I also liked halva with black cumin (unfortunately, before I could take a picture, it has been already eaten by us). English version: The Mount of Olives is already on the Palestinian side of Jerusalem. You can get there by planning a long walk, but it is a full-day trip. I recommend catching a bus in the center at the bus station, for which you will pay only 8 shekels, and you have lift straight to the top of the hill. At the foot of the mountain is the world's oldest Jewish cemetery. Every orthodox Jew wants to be buried there, and apparently the reservation alone costs a fortune. It is from this place that the Last Judgment is to begin. Going down you will also find the Olive Garden, where Jesus prayed before the Way of the Cross. Its stations are located along the entire mountain route, so you can explore everything in one walk. English version: Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher on Golgotha Another must-see for anyone visiting Jerusalem. It is the most important Christian temple in the Old Town, located in the Christian part. The built church is to symbolize the place of passion, crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Izrael to miejsce stworzone do jedzenia! English version: Israel is a place created to eat! Their cuisine consists primarily of hummus, olive oil, eggs, pickles and a perfect combination of spices. Even the simplest breakfast served in our hostel was absolutely delicious! The Dome of The Rock - Kopuła Na Skale Miejsce, do którego nie tak łatwo się dostać. English version: A place that is not so easy to get to. The Dome of the Rock is located in the Palestinian part of the city and is open to representatives of other religions only at designated times for sightseeing. It is absolutely guarded, and both Palestinian and Jerusalem police treat visitors quite harshly. Women must have every body surface covered. Long sleeves, loose hair covering the neck and covered wrists. I was asked to put on an additional skirt because according to the authorities there, my pants were too tight in their opinion. Despite the seemingly unfavorable rules for free visiting here, the Dome of the Rock made an amazing impression on me and I know that I would like to go back there again someday! Liczy ono zaledwie kościół, dlatego planując przyjazd do Betlejem warto poświęcić góra 3-4 godziny. English version: Being in Jerusalem for 3 days, it is impossible not to visit Bethlehem as well. The city itself is already in Palestine, therefore, when you are planning a trip there, you must have a passport with you. You can reach the city from the Jerusalem bus station, where buses to Bethlehem run on average every hour. I honestly admit that Bethlehem gave me the least emotion. Virtually unmarked (this is obviously a matter of religious disputes) and the big downside is the lack of organization in this place, which can be felt at every step. In the church grotto, which is to symbolize the birthplace of Jesus, there are such huge queues that after a few hours of standing at one point, you are not in the mood to go on sightseeing more. Bethlehem itself is really small. It counts only a church, so planning a trip there it is worth spending up to 3-4 hours. English version: I hope you liked the post, and I invite you to the second part next week!

Ever wondered what a holiday in Israel would be like? Sharon Ehrlich Bershadsky grew up in Israel and tells us about the country’s historic sights, local dishes and why Tel-Aviv’s nightlife is legendary. Combine Tel-Aviv with Jerusalem and you really will get to see the best of what Israel has to offer. What is Tel Aviv like? Very few cities on the planet have the eclectic mix of experiences that Tel Aviv offers. If you are into history and archaeology, Old Jaffa in the southern part of the city is one of the world’s oldest ports and is mentioned more than once in the Bible (it’s where Jonah departed from by boat to be swallowed by a whale). The Old Jaffa visitors’ centre showcases the local archaeological finds and provides a 3D experience that gives visitors the history of the area in an entertaining way. Museums, opera, music and dance – Tel Aviv offers it all when it comes to culture. The city is full of artists, from the artist colony now based in Jaffa to the craftspeople who sell their wares twice a week at Nahalat Binyamin market. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art has an impressive selection of artists on display and those who enjoy a more unique experience can visit the Ilana Goor Museum. The Israeli Opera House hosts performances year-round that include operas, music and dance. If you’re more into relaxing on the beach, Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean coast is over eight miles of golden sands. You can find a huge variety of watersports to enjoy, and the promenade that runs along the beach is home to bars and restaurants that will offer a quick bite to eat and a cocktail to sip while you’re watching a spectacular sunset. Is Tel Aviv a safe city? Personal safety is very important to Israelis and keeping those who visit safe is a high priority. What should we visit in Tel Aviv? You could visit Carmel Market, the oldest established market in Tel Aviv, and haggle for goods. Take a visit to Old Jaffa to enjoy the 3D experience, make a wish at the ‘Wishing Bridge’ and soak up the beautiful views over Tel Aviv. I’d suggest taking a tour of the ‘White City’ to see the Bauhaus architecture, which has been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. When it comes to dining, there are spectacular restaurants and the city is the world leader in vegan cuisine! From enjoying a typical Israeli breakfast buffet at your hotel to eating an extraordinary meal at one of the city’s fine dining establishments, those who visit may find their taste buds refuse to go anywhere else! The city also hosts many events and festivals, including the annual Pride Celebration every June, and there’s always something going on. How far is Tel Aviv from Jerusalem? Not far at all. The drive between the two cities takes around an hour, but very soon a new train line will open that will only take 28 minutes. What is there to see in Jerusalem? The Old City is an ancient, walled area of Jerusalem that is divided into four quarters: Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian. It holds treasures like The Western (Wailing) Wall, the most important site in Judaism; The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the believed site of Jesus’ crucifixion for many Christian faiths; and the Dome of the Rock & Al-Aqsa Mosque for those who follow Islam. Historic locations and archaeological finds can be viewed everywhere and most who visit will feel the spiritual atmosphere surround and embrace them. While in Jerusalem, you can visit the Mahane Yehuda Market. In the day, you can buy a Bite Card that allows you to sample a huge variety of tasty treats from the vendors; and, at night, the food goes away and the bars take centre stage! You can also book a variety of tours of the market, from cooking experiences to night bar tours. Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, offers a linear trip through the rise of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and the bright future of the Jewish people. The story is told by the people who lived through it and is a must-see for anyone visiting Jerusalem. On a history note, I would also recommend The Israel Museum, where you can discover local archaeology, an impressive model of the Old City circa 66 CE and, of course, the Dead Sea Scrolls. When is the best time to visit Tel Aviv and Jerusalem? These two cities are great to visit any time of year. The time of year you’re most likely to see rain and cooler temperatures is from December through to February. Spring and autumn normally have pleasant temperatures and very little rain, and those who like it hot and sunny can visit during the summer months. Tell us about the nightlife in Tel Aviv Tel Aviv’s nightlife is epic and legendary! The city’s remarkable bar and club scene offers a party atmosphere that rivals anywhere else in the world. Tel Aviv is called the city that never sleeps for a good reason: clubs are open all hours and most of the time they don’t get busy until well after midnight. Those who prefer a quieter night will find an abundance of bars with a variety of themes to enjoy. What local dishes would you recommend trying in the cities? Hummus. It may sound cliché, but Israelis really know how to make hummus. Falafel is very popular and available everywhere, especially with street food vendors. Shakshuka, a delightful mixture of stewed tomatoes, garlic and spices with eggs, is also something everyone should enjoy. Then there is Sabich, consisting of a pitta stuffed with aubergines, hard boiled eggs, Israeli salad and tasty tahini and/or hummus. One of the brilliant things about food in Israel is the fact that it’s a fusion of traditions from around the world. When people moved to Israel, they brought their regional recipes with them. The combination of so many food ideologies and locally-grown superior ingredients make Israel a food-lovers’ paradise! Can we reach the Dead Sea from either of these cities? Easily. Day trips to the Dead Sea are easy from either city, and the experience is one of a kind. Effortlessly floating in the salty waters is unique, and the health benefits of the mud and water make it well worth a visit. Do you have any tips for us before we travel? When visiting Israel, you should bring good sunscreen, comfortable shoes, a decent sunhat and a water bottle. Those who are blessed to visit shouldn’t be afraid of speaking to the locals. Israelis are warm and welcoming, and it’s not unusual to meet someone, have a chat and end up getting invited to their home for a family meal. Israelis love their country and are happy to share this love with those who come to experience it. Don’t worry too much about language barriers either. Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages, but English is taught in schools and a large majority of the population can hold a conversation in English. Lastly, as tempting as it is to just stay in one place (especially somewhere as fun as Tel Aviv), take advantage of the proximity of the rest of the country and see a variety of locations. Within a two-hour drive of Tel Aviv, you can experience the green, rolling hills of the Galilee; the lowest spot on earth at the Dead Sea; or even desert landscapes in the Negev. Explore this beautiful country and enjoy yourself! Inspired? Year-round sunshine, beaches, religious sites and incredible nightlife, Israel has a lot to offer for a city break with a difference. You can combine Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, add destinations such as Eilat and the Dead Sea; or countries such as Jordan to create an unforgettable holiday. Petra Shepherd discovers a fascinating past and a vibrant present This slideshow requires JavaScript. With 4,000 years of history, Jerusalem is the holiest city of them all, a true melting pot of people, cultures, traditions and religion and easily combined with nearby Tel Aviv, the 24 hour beach city. It’s a compelling mix, with both cities currently having a bit of moment as I found out on a recent visit. No trip to Jerusalem would be complete without a drive to the Mount of Olives for a panoramic view of the city and a trip to the Old City, seeing the Western “wailing” Wall, walking through the Armenian and Jewish quarters to the recently excavated and restored Cardo (the Roman road) and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. However, I can also recommend a tour of the City of David where ongoing archaeological excavations of ancient Jerusalem, include fortifications and elaborate water systems, Hezekiah’s Tunnel, the Pool of Shiloan and a newly opened visitor centre. Part of the tour allows you to walk inside a 2,000 year old water drainage system. The exposed drainage tunnel measure 800 metres (2625 feet) long and a metre (3 feet wide) so not for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia but still a unique experience, crouching down as you wade through water up to or above your knees and be sure to wear shoes that you’re not afraid to get soaked. Also fun is “Hallelujah”, the City of David’s newest night-time spectacular. Using the latest technological advances, the show is screened onto the antiquities, with the walls of the Old City visible in the distance. The Israel Museum (the largest cultural institution in Israel) is another top attraction. The museum houses an encyclopaedic collection of works dating from prehistory to the present day in Archaeology, Fine Arts and Jewish Art and Life. Since opening in 1965, the museum has built a collection of nearly 500,000 objects, my favorites being the dress of a Moroccan bride and a Hungarian funeral carriage. There are also a couple of other absolute must sees. The Shrine of the Book, home to the 2,000 year old Dead Sea Scrolls (the earliest known biblical manuscripts) and a model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period. The detailed 1:50 scale model, covers nearly one acre and recreates the topography and architecture of ancient Jerusalem at its peak in 66 CE, shortly before its destruction by the Romans. Meanwhile, The Shrine of the Book with its distinctive modern design by Frederick Kiesler and Armand Bartos has not only the renowned Dead Sea Scrolls but other archaeological artefacts and rare medieval manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible. The upper level of the Shrine introduces visitors to the story of the Scrolls and the Judean Desert sect. At the heart of the Shrine is a presentation of original Dead Sea Scrolls, examples of sectarian texts and the oldest biblical manuscripts in existence, from the eight most complete scrolls ever discovered, surrounding a full-scale facsimile of the magnificently preserved Great Isaiah Scroll. If you’ve had your fill of culture and history, then Israel’s thriving wine industry has generated a great opportunity for wine tourism and an alternative day out. More than 25 wineries can be found in the Judean Hills with The Judean Hills Quartet, nothing to do with music but a group of artisan wineries, providing a window into the rebirth of a beautiful wine region. Eli Ben Zaken is the founding father of the Judean Hills renaissance and it was at Domaine Du Castel, his family owned winery that I enjoyed quality Bordeaux style reds and Burgundy style white. Eli proudly showed me an e mail from the head of Sotheby’s wine department, describing his wine as a “real tour de force, brilliantly made and very classic”. Praise indeed. Wine tours might be the relatively new kid on the block for tourism in Israel but the diverse foodie scene with influences from all over the world has long been a highlight. We have a lot to thank world-acclaimed chef and owner of multiple London restaurants, Yotam Ottolenghi for and it’s not all pomegranates and salads. The cuisine reflects Israel’s nature as a melting pot for many communities at the meeting point of East and West. Expect a fusion of traditional Middle Eastern, North African and exotic Asian flavours plus continental European cuisine. Every restaurant and cafe in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv was supposedly home to “the best hummus in the world” whilst a breakfast buffet in even the smallest of hotels would have dozens of choices and don’t even get me started on the bakeries. Not to be missed on any culinary adventure is a trip to the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem and the smaller but equally atmospheric Carmel market in Tel Aviv. Rivalling the new wave of food markets which have popped up around the world, Sarona Market also in Tel Aviv is an indoor gourmet food market which also got my approval. “Two Cities, One Break” is the current tag line for Jerusalem and Tel Aviv with Tel Aviv being the fly and flop, R and R part of the break, the chilled out sister to Jerusalem’s more highbrow older brother. Titled the ‘Mediterranean Capital of Cool’ by the New York Times, this is a 24 hour city, go for the restaurant scene, beaches and balmy Mediterranean Sea. However, if you still need a dose of culture and history, neighbouring Jaffa Port (the oldest in the world) has stone buildings, cobbled lanes and ancient history whilst lovers of architecture will appreciate Tel Aviv’s Bauhaus architecture. Tel Aviv’s 4000 or so Bauhaus buildings collectively called White City are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Israel, the land of creation, the ‘promised land’ of milk and honey has not only a fascinating past but as I found out also a vibrant present. Information has information on Israel has information on Jerusalem has information on Tel Aviv Hotels Dan Panorama, Tel Aviv overlooking the Old City of Jaffa with huge pool and sundeck Design boutique hotel with roof top infinity pool New boutique hotel on Dorot Rishonim Street Eats upscale, quintessential Tel Aviv bistro Mediterranean dishes in the pastoral wadi of Abu Ghosh One of the best restaurants in Jerusalem with a creative and surprising menu
